What is Cold Brew Concentrate?

Cold brew concentrate is a highly concentrated coffee beverage made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in cold water for an extended period. This slow brewing method extracts a smooth, less acidic flavor compared to traditional hot-brewed coffee. Thus, cold brew concentrate is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed in various ways. It can be diluted with water or milk to create a refreshing iced coffee, or it can be used to make cold brew lattes, floats, or cocktails. The concentrated nature of cold brew also allows for customization, making it perfect in a dirty soda recipe.

Grape Dirty Soda

A glass filled with a deep purple-colored beverage, with ice cubes and what appears to be fresh grape slices floating in the liquid.

Sweet and tart perfectly combine in this Cranberry Grape Dirty Soda. This refreshing beverage combines the classic flavors of grape soda with the tangy sweetness of cranberry syrup. A drizzle of creamy half-and-half adds a touch of luxury, elevating this simple soda into a decadent treat/mocktail experience. Plus, it’s a way to give a little joy to the little kid deep down inside of you without just sipping from a can of soda.

A glass of grape soda with half and half foam on top sits behind a pile of cranberries and grapes as a small container of half and half sits in the background.

Is Grape Soda Actually Made From Grapes?

While grape soda might evoke images of juicy grapes, the truth is a bit more complex. The distinctive flavor of grape soda often comes from a chemical compound called methyl anthranilate, which mimics the taste of grapes without requiring actual fruit. This synthetic flavoring allows for a consistent and affordable taste in soda production. While some brands may incorporate real grape juice for a more natural flavor, the majority of grape sodas rely on this artificial flavoring to achieve that familiar, sweet and tangy taste. So in short, no, you will not find any grapes in your grape soda. But, you will find a complex compound that showcases the magic of science.

The sugar and water are heated to create a simple syrup, and then you add the hazelnut flavoring. A glass filled with dirty orange soda, garnished with a slice of orange.

When Was Orange Soda Invented?

The exact origins of orange soda are about as clear as an orange itself. But, it’s believed that the first orange soda, Orange Crush, was created in 1906 by J.M. Thompson in Chicago. However, it wasn’t until 1911 that the formula was perfected by California-born beverage chemist Neil C. Ward. Ward’s innovation brought the “zesty, all-natural orange flavor” of Orange Crush to the masses. Soon after this recipe took its form, he and Clayton J. Howel founded the Orange Crush Company in 1916.

Since then, orange soda has become a beloved classic, with countless iterations and brands emerging over the years. Today you’ll see generic and name brands in just about every store.

Can I Use Something Other Than Half and Half?

Absolutely! The beauty of dirty sodas is in their versatility and simplicity. While half-and-half is a classic choice for adding creaminess, you can experiment with other dairy alternatives. Oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk can provide a unique twist, adding a subtle nuttiness or sweetness to the drink. For a richer, more indulgent experience, consider using heavy cream or even ice cream. By exploring different milk alternatives, you can create a wide range of dirty soda flavors and textures to suit your preferences, whether that be more of a milkshake vibe or more soda than cream.

Partridge in a Pear Tree Christmas Mocktail

0
An orange Christmas mocktail staged with Christmas decorations and a red pear

This is a rich and fragrant Christmas mocktail that celebrates the holiday season with a festive, warm, spiced pear flavor. It draws inspiration from the very first, foundational line of the “The Twelve Days of Christmas” classic holiday song. Since the “partridge in the pear tree” is the line that you sing over and over again and the most universally recognizable in the song, we made our Partridge in a Pear Tree the Christmas mocktail that anyone can enjoy.

An orange mocktail garnished with pear sits on a black bar cart, looking inviting and delicious

So, Why in the World is Your True Love Giving You a Partridge in a Pear Tree?

There’s some dispute over what the origin of the “partridge in a pear tree” line is. Partridges are fiercely defensive of their babies, including a willingness to sacrifice their own lives to fend off predators. So, the Roman Catholic Church used the partridge as a symbol for Jesus’s sacrifice. The “Twelve Days of Christmas” has been alleged to be a mnemonic device to help children remember elements of the Catholic faith during a time when practicing Catholicism openly was restricted in some Protestant countries, with each gift in the song representing a specific religious concept. The pear tree symbolizes the cross. However, there is one other interpretation. Some scholars believe that the song was originally in French, and “a partridge in a pear tree” line is a mispronunciation of the French word for partridge: une perdrixOur Christmas mocktail includes neither elements of the Catholic catechism nor enough alcohol to improve your French, but Katrina Tomacchio’s of Loaded Food Group‘s recipe is a surefire crowd-pleaser this year.

Two Turtle Doves Tequila and Mezcal Cocktail

0
A Christmas cocktail with tequila and mezcal staged with two fake birds representing the two turtle doves in the song

To celebrate the “two turtle doves” line of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” we deploy the dynamic duo of cocktail pairings. Mezcal and tequila go hand in hand in a cocktail, as beautifully as chocolate and cherries. Bartender Rachel Sinagra of Fig & Ash also used an egg white to mirror the froth and creaminess of eggnog during the cheery holiday season. She added chocolate to this mezcal and tequila cocktail as a callback to the popular Dove brand of chocolate to further call back to the turtle doves.

A red-orange tequila and mezcal cocktail on a black background

Two Turtle Doves?

If you actually sit down and listen to the lyrics of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” they’re a little puzzling. Some historians suggest each part of the song represents a different part of the Christian faith. In this case, the two turtle doves would represent the Old and New Testament. These are the two texts that make up the Christian Bible. The Old Testament is the religious texts prior the arrival of Jesus Christ. The New collects the stories of Jesus Christ and his disciples. The turtle dove is a motif of peace and friendship for its sweet, gentle nature and soft call. This tequila and mezcal cocktail is not Biblical in nature, but you can enjoy its epic flavors with friends and loved ones in the spirit of peace and collaboration.
