View Film Premieres from Around the World at the Three Rivers Film Festival

0
Two men stand on the red carpet of the Three Rivers Film Festival.

Movies bring us together no matter where we are from. The impact that these films leave on us create connections that last a lifetime and memories that stay in our brains. One of the ultimate ways to enjoy the atmosphere that movies create is through the Three Rivers Film Festival, a celebration of art and creativity. This festival focuses on uplifting independent filmmakers through public viewings from November 12 to the 23 this year in Pittsburgh.

View Over 20 Films at the 2025 Three Rivers Film Festival

Each year, filmmakers from all over the world come together to showcase their work to an audience and their peers. The festival is the first time all these films premiere, and, for many, its also the first time that an audience will view their work in general.

This year, the festival runs from November 12 to November 23. Films are shown each day, and some showings include appearances from the cast and crew for Q&As. The genres range from coming-of-age to horror to comedy, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. There’s even an all ages shorts block at the Harris Theater on Saturday, November 22 that guarantees each short’s content is appropriate for children, too.

Take in a Short Film

If you’re not in the mood to watch an entire film, starting November 16 is the Pittsburgh Shorts Festival. It’s just like the film festival but with short features so more titles can be shown during a block of time. Not to mention, any attending filmmakers will be available for a Q&A after their short.

During the Pittsburgh Shorts week, the festival will host a Filmmakers Conference from November 21 to November 23. There will be a number of panels for creatives to explore, from short-form storytelling seminars to discussions on artificial intelligence in the industry. Plus, there will be many opportunities for networking throughout the whole festival.

This year some of the special panels and speakers feature Independent Film Today, Beyond the Lens: Embracing Diversity, the importance of the Oscars, and keynote speaker Christine Vachon (producer of Past Lives, May/December, Boys Don’t Cry, and more).

For a complete schedule of the showings which will release on October 22 and to purchase tickets, visit filmpittsburgh.org.

Apple Crumble

0
An apple crumble in a round baking dish with a cup of hot cocoa in the left corner, a hand reaching towards a plate of 3 gold forks in the right, and the corner of a piece of the crumble on a plate in the upper right corner.

‘Tis the season for a tasty Apple Crumble. In a recent TABLE Recipe Contest, we asked you, our readers, to submit your best apple creations. And boy oh boy, did you come through. The TABLE team then gathered a bushel of fresh, locally-sourced apples, donned our aprons, and headed to the test kitchen with your recipe submissions. After a long day of peeling, coring, baking, cooking, braising, pureeing, and of course tasting, we rolled ourselves into the conference room to select a winner. In the end, a traditional apple recipe with exceptional flavor, bobbed its way to the top.

Tips for Making Apple Crumble

Use a combination of tart and sweet apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp like we have, for depth of flavor. When baking, place a small liner under dish so it will not spill in oven. You can top the crumble with your favorite pumpkin spice whipped topping or ice cream. And don’t forget to put your portion away first because it will be gone in seconds.

BYO Snacks to the Era’s Tour Movie

0
Three bowls of chili-lime popcorn sit on a white table.

Headed to Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour? Don’t pay inflated prices for a small box of M&Ms. Instead, invest in a few quality ingredients and give yourself a variety of better flavor options by making your own movie snacks. Still feeling the urge to splurge on that buttery theater popcorn? We not only have some ideas to upgrade that snacking experience, we also have some special recipes that remind us of Tay Tay herself!

Chai Snickerdoodles

One of Taylor’s favorite treats to make is Chai Sugar Cookies. So here’s our take on that warm spice with Chai Snickerdoodles. The taste of these cookies combines sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and ginger into one flavorful bite. Not to mention, they’re small enough to fit in your purse.

Chili-Lime Popcorn

It’s impossible to pass on freshly popped movie theater popcorn, but you can add a bit of zest to this must-have. Mix together your own selection of spices, similar to Tajin seasoning, to sprinkle on top and add some extra goodness to this snack staple.

Ever’s (Banana) Muffins

You can’t go wrong with a moist muffin, especially when combined with a tasty slice of banana. These treats have no refined sugar, wheat, oil, gluten, or dairy (other than eggs) and are ready in 30 minutes for a perfect last-minute addition.

Fennel and Coriander Cashews

An aerial shot of herb roasted cashews on a white plate with brown trim. A spoon full of cashews sits off to the right.

These earthy, nutty, crunchy cashews can easily be tossed into a plastic baggie and put in your pocket for a bite on the go. They’re roasted with fresh herbs that give the nuts a new salty flavor profile. Plus, they can be prepared in advance and stored for up to two days in an airtight container.

Gluten-Free Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies

a cup of tea and some cookies on a table.

Taylor’s albums folklore and evermore are perfect for enjoying a cup of warm Earl Grey tea on a cold day. Take that experience and bundle it up into a cookie that’s also gluten-free. These shortbread cookies are sturdy and made with crushed Earl Grey tea leaves.

In a complex world where optimism can seem like a controversial choice, we say go for it! Embrace the sunniest possible interpretation of events. Bring your own sunshine wherever you go. Beam your very own light out into the world. Start with great fall sweaters whose colors will give you a head start on all of the above.

Everlane’s Alpaca V-Necked Cropped Cardigan

A bright yellow cropped cardigan sweater over a silk long skirt

A ray of subtle but warming sunshine! Crafted from yarns made of a blend of alpaca, recycled nylon, and Merino wool, this oh-so-comfy cardigan is pilling-resistant, long-lasting, and earth-friendly. It features a deep V neckline, a clean button front, and a cropped body for a flattering fit. Layer over your favorite tee or turtleneck for an effortlessly cool (and luxuriously warm) look. It comes in five colors, but raffia is our favorite.

Everlane’s Grade-A Cashmere Crew

A black man wears a gold sweater with black pants

Like a glowing sunrise, this glowing color opens the senses and makes us feel alive. Made of soft, light cashmere. By its very nature, cashmere fibers are made to trap warmth, so you will feel nice and toasty.

Free People’s Easy Street Tunic

Yes, we also chose this easy-breezy sweater’s white version as one of the best fall sweaters. But we kind of fell in love with this color, too. Pineapple Fusion pulls us into a carefree, joyous mood — like a summer day at the pool. Think blooming dahlias, sunshine, and piña coladas. Just what we need to buoy us up in the winter weeks ahead.

Vince Wool and Cashmere V-Neck Sweater

The lifeforce of this brilliant Mandarin sweater says Live a little! When good advice like this comes along, we try to listen.

An orange/red quarter zip sweater

Merino wool and lyocell blended yarns make this sweater both breathable and warm. Its rich orange color speaks to the earthy pleasures of a hike followed by drinks around a campfire. Perfect for the guy’s-guy on your list.

Limited Edition Coogi Rust Crew Neck

A black man wears a rust colored coogi sweater

In case you haven’t heard, the Coogi sweater is coming back! We love the tone-on-tone color strategy here: it guarantees years of comfortable wear as your game-day best, or your ready-to-party got-to.

Turkey Sausage Gravy and Flaky Biscuits

0
A comforting and savory dish featuring homemade flaky biscuits smothered in a rich and flavorful turkey sausage gravy, offering a hearty and satisfying breakfast or brunch option.

Who doesn’t love a breakfast of biscuits and gravy? Cory Hughes of Fig & Ash shares this Thanksgiving version of the beloved old Granny-style favorite, gravy bread. Many of us remember biscuits and gravy as a sort of easy weeknight dinner — a perfect choice for those chilly evenings of fall and winter. This biscuits and gravy recipe is perfect for breakfast on the day after Thanksgiving, or for dinner on any of the nights after the big feast.

Tips for Making Biscuits From Scratch

Whenever you’re crafting biscuits from scratch, the first step is to keep your butter, milk, and water chilled for a flaky texture. You also want to be gentle with your handling throughout. Avoid overworking the dough, as this can lead to tough biscuits. Whenever the baking time finally passes, allow the biscuits to cool slightly before slicing to prevent them from crumbling.

Turkey Sausage Gravy and Flaky Biscuits

  • Author: Cory Hughes

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sausage Gravy

  • 1/2 cup diced smoked turkey sausage
  • 1 oz clarified butter
  • 1 oz all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ cups turkey stock
  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, minced

For the Biscuits

  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 16 tbsp frozen butter
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

For the Sausage Gravy

  1. Place the diced turkey sausage in a skillet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and cook until crispy and hot. Remove and set aside.
  2. Wipe out the skillet and add the clarified butter and flour. Stir on low-medium heat until roux forms. It should look like wallpaper paste; you’ll know the roux is ready when it smells like Jiffy Pop popcorn. You’re looking for an almond color.
  3. Stir in the turkey stock with a whisk until fully incorporated. Whisk until the stock almost boils, and then reduce to a light simmer for 20 minutes. Make sure you’re whisking every couple of minutes.
  4. Take the turkey sausage and drain out any excess fat. Fold into the gravy. Add the minced fresh thyme and taste. Adjust with salt and pepper if necessary. Pro tip: When the turkey breast comes out of the sous vide bag add the liquid to a measuring cup.
  5. Split the fat out and add the turkey juice to your turkey stock. Remember, if you add 1 cup of stock, you must adjust the roux ratio.

For the Flaky Biscuits

  1. Combine all the dry ingredients together. Add the butter and mash with a pastry blender until fully incorporated.
  2. Add the milk and let sit for 20 minutes. If the biscuits are too tacky to work with, try adding a tablespoon of flour at a time.
  3. Then, divide the dough into six equal portions and bake at 425 degrees with a high fan.
