What is the History of the Ward 8 Cocktail?
The Ward 8 cocktail is older than Prohibition, dating back to late-19th-century Boston and closely tied to the city’s political history. It was even reportedly created to celebrate the election of Martin Lomasney, a powerful political figure in Boston’s Eighth Ward. Built on rye whiskey with citrus juices and grenadine, the drink reflects the era’s preference for softer drinks that favor fruit and sweetness. First appearing in print in the early 1900s, the Ward 8 became a regional classic, embodying Boston’s civic pride. Today, it endures as a symbol of American cocktail history, ironic given we’re also celebrating 250 years of America.
